Ernst Kretschmann, a colleague of mine at Zühlke Engineering, gave a talk about Scaling Agile Processes. He introduces the Waterfall Apologists, beautifully describes how Waterfall Processes normally scale (mostly very bad) and then continues to compare it to the way that Spotify is dealing with Agile on Steroids (his second version of presentation title).
His base is a document by Henrik Kniberg and Anders Ivarsson that describes how Spotify is dealing with multiple teams in a product development organisation. They are using concepts of Tribes, Guilds, Chapters and Squads that forms a model that looks a bit like a matrix organisation but at the same time it is not.
Watch Ernst’s talk or study the document if you want to learn more.
